Disease Overview

Adrenocortical Carcinoma

Uterus Cancer or Uterine cancer, refers to certain types of cancer which have an effect on the uterus ( part of the female reproductive system). Generally, Uterus Cancer forms in the endometrium of the uterus, as an endometrial cancer (detailed in previous section), which is the most common type of uterine cancer. As a less common form called uterine sarcoma, the uterus cancer gets formed and grows in the muscles and tissues supporting the uterus.

  • Uterine sarcoma is a cancer form in which cancerous cells get formed in the muscles and tissues supporting the uterus.
  • The risk of developing Uterine sarcoma increases on certain factors such as exposure of the pelvis to radiation therapy or receiving any tamoxifen treatments.
  • Abnormal bleeding or a mass in the vagina are considered as probable signs of Uterine sarcoma.
  • Physical examination and history, Pelvic examination, Pap test, Transvaginal ultrasound, Dilatation and curettage and Endometrial biopsy are used for the early detection and diagnosis of any Uterine sarcoma
  • The treatment options and the chances of disease recovery are dependent on the stage, size and type of the tumor.

Treatment Option Overview

  • Patients suffering from Uterine sarcoma have different types of treatment options.
  • Standard treatment options for Uterine sarcoma are:
    • Surgical Removal
    • External / Internal Radiation therapy by using high-energy x-rays.
    • Chemotherapy by use of Oral Drugs or injectables
    • Hormone therapy to remove or block the action of the hormones and stop the growth of the cancer cells.
  • Some other newer types of treatments are also being tested in clinical trials.
  • Depending on the location and stage of this cancer, it may be beneficial for certain patients to opt for treatment through a clinical trial / cancer research process.
  • The Protocol or methodology of a clinical trial determines if the patients can opt for that clinical trial before starting their cancer treatment or during that or after that.
  • Follow-up tests and periodic check-ups should be got done to see if the disease condition has improved or if there is a recurrence or come-back of the cancer.
