Disease Overview

Adrenocortical Carcinoma

Thyroid Cancer is a thyroid tumor which is formed by the growth of abnormal cells in the thyroid gland (a butterfly shaped gland located in the front of the neck). Thyroid cancer is not a common form of cancer but patients suffering from this disease have chances of good recovery as it is usually detected early and with positive effects from the treatments. In some cases, Thyroid cancer has been observed to come back, at times after many years after treatment.

  • Thyroid cancer is a cancer form in which cancerous cells get formed in the tissues of the thyroid gland.
  • The risk of developing Thyroid cancer increases on certain factors such as Age (25-65 years), female gender, and any radiation exposure in childhood.
  • Hoarseness, Breathing or swallowing trouble or a lump in the neck are considered as probable signs of Thyroid cancer.
  • Physical examination and history, Laryngoscopy, Blood hormone studies, Blood chemistry studies, Ultrasound exam, CAT scan, Fine-needle aspiration biopsy of the thyroid and Surgical biopsy are used for the early detection and diagnosis of any Thyroid cancer.
  • The treatment options and the chances of disease recovery are dependent on the stage and type of the cancer.

Treatment Option Overview

  • Patients suffering from Thyroid cancer have different types of treatment options.
  • Standard treatment options for Thyroid cancer are:
    • Surgical Removal which may include procedures like Lobectomy, Near-total thyroidectomy, Total thyroidectomy or Lymphadenectomy.
    • External / Internal Radiation therapy and also radioactive iodine therapy.
    • Chemotherapy by use of Oral Drugs or injectables.
    • Thyroid hormone therapy by use of drugs to prevent the production of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) by the body.
    • Targeted therapy using drugs etc for the identification and targeted attack on specific cancerous cells only
  • Some other newer type of treatments is also being tested in clinical trials.
  • Depending on the location and stage of this cancer, it may be beneficial for certain patients to opt for treatment through a clinical trial / cancer research process.
  • The Protocol or methodology of a clinical trial determines if the patients can opt for that clinical trial before starting their cancer treatment or during that or after that.
  • Follow-up tests and periodic check-ups should be got done to see if the disease condition has improved or if there is a recurrence or come-back of the cancer.
