Disease Overview

Adrenocortical Carcinoma

Stomach Cancer, is medically referred as a Gastric cancer and it arises from the stomach. At times, in its early stages, no noticeable symptoms are caused by the Stomach cancer (asymptomatic) and at other times it may cause symptoms which can indicate stomach cancer, but also some other related or totally unrelated disorders. The time taken for the specific symptoms to show may have already taken the cancer to an advanced stage and by then it may have already spread to various other distant body parts too; this characteristic being the main cause of the relatively poor prognosis of gastric cancer.

  • Stomach / Gastric cancer is a cancer form in which cancerous cells get formed in the stomach’s lining.
  • The risk of developing Gastric cancer increases with factors such as having certain stomach diseases, taking improper and imbalanced diet and being old and of male gender.
  • Stomach discomfort, indigestion, blood in the stool, Vomiting etc. are considered as probable signs of Gastric cancer.
  • Physical examination and history, Complete blood count test, Upper endoscopy, Fecal occult blood test, Barium swallow x-rays of the esophagus and stomach, Biopsy and CAT scan are used for the early detection and diagnosis of Gastric cancer.
  • The treatment options and the chances of disease recovery are dependent on the stage and spread area of the cancer and also the general health of the patient.

Treatment Option Overview

  • Patients suffering from Gastric cancer have different types of treatment options.
  • Standard treatment options for Gastric cancer are:
    • Surgical Removal which may include procedures like Subtotal gastrectomy, Total gastrectomy, Endoluminal stent placement, Endoluminal laser therapy and Gastrojejunostomy Surgery
    • Chemotherapy by use of Oral Drugs or injectables
    • External / Internal Radiation therapy by using high-energy x-rays
    • Chemoradiation therapy as a combination of radiation therapy with chemotherapy.
    • Targeted therapy using drugs etc for the identification and targeted attack on specific cancerous cells only
  • Some other newer type of treatment is also being tested in clinical trials.
  • Depending on the stage and the type of cancer, it may be beneficial for certain patients to opt for treatment through a clinical trial / cancer research process.
  • The Protocol or methodology of a clinical trial determines if the patients can opt for that clinical trial before starting their cancer treatment or during that or after that.
  • Follow-up tests and periodic check-ups should be got done to see if the disease condition has improved or if there is a recurrence or come-back of the cancer.
