Disease Overview

Adrenocortical Carcinoma

Skin Cancer is an abnormal skin growth with different degrees of cancerous cells formation. Depending on the type of skin cells from which it originates, the common malignant skin cancers are classified as melanoma and nonmelanoma - basal cell cancer and squamous cell cancer. Skin cancer tumor is easily seen and detected at an early stage, as its general area of development is in the outermost skin layer (the epidermis). Unlike cancers which originate in the stomach, the lung, the pancreas etc, skin cancer is not generally life threatening but a disfigurement is a high probability outcome. The diagnosis of Melanoma at an early stage of occurrence can make its treatment easier, however a delayed diagnosis of melanoma skin cancer can result in a survival rate which is lesser than the non-melanoma.

  • Skin cancer is a cancer form in which cancerous cells get formed in the tissues of the skin.
  • The common types of the skin cancers are Melanoma skin cancers and Nonmelanoma skin cancers.
  • The risk of developing Skin cancer increases with factors such as long exposures to sunlight, having a fair skin color, light-colored eyes etc.
  • Change in the skin colour and tone are considered as probable signs of Skin cancer.
  • Skin examination and Biopsy - Shave biopsy, Punch biopsy or Excisional biopsy - are used for the early detection and diagnosis of Skin cancer.
  • The treatment options and the chances of disease recovery are dependent on the stage, type, size and body part of the tumor and also the general health of the patient.

Treatment Option Overview

  • Patients suffering from Skin cancer have different types of treatment options.
  • Standard treatment options for Skin cancer are:
    • Surgical Removal which may include Mohs micrographic surgery, Simple excision & Shave excision, Electrodesiccation & curettage, Cryosurgery, Laser surgery and Dermabrasion.
    • External / Internal Radiation therapy by using high-energy x-rays.
    • Chemotherapy by use of Oral Drugs or injectables.
    • Biologic therapy, also known as biotherapy or immunotherapy, in which the immune system of the patient is used to fight cancer.
    • Photodynamic therapy as the use of a certain type of laser light to activate a pre-injected light-activating drug for killing the cancer cells and avoiding any damage to healthy tissue surrounding them.
  • Some other newer type of treatment are also being tested in clinical trials.
  • Depending on the stage and the type of cancer, it may be beneficial for certain patients to opt for treatment through a clinical trial / cancer research process.
  • The Protocol or methodology of a clinical trial determines if the patients can opt for that clinical trial before starting their cancer treatment or during that or after that.
  • Follow-up tests and periodic check-ups should be got done to see if the disease condition has improved or if there is a recurrence or come-back of the cancer.
