Disease Overview

Adrenocortical Carcinoma

Prostate Cancer is a type of cancer which gets developed in the prostate, a male reproductive system gland. Generally the growth of prostate cancers is slow but in certain cases it has been observed to show an aggressive growth also. Certain other body parts, specifically the bones and lymph nodes, may get affected by a spread of the cancer cells from the prostate. The effects of Prostate cancer may show as pain while urinating, urinating difficulty, erectile dysfunction or any other sexual intercourse problems. The later stages of the disease may show other potential symptoms too.

  • Prostate cancer is a cancer form in which cancerous cells get formed in the tissues of the prostate.
  • Blood in the urine or abnormal urination patterns are considered as probable signs of Prostate cancer.
  • Digital rectal exam , Prostate-specific antigen test, Transrectal ultrasound and Biopsy - Transrectal or Transperineal - are used for the early detection and diagnosis of Prostate cancer.
  • The treatment options and the chances of disease recovery are dependent on the stage and spread of the cancer and also the age and the general health of the patient.

Treatment Option Overview

  • • Patients suffering from Prostate cancer have different types of treatment options.
  • • Standard treatment options for Prostate cancer are:
    • Surgical Removal which may include a Wide local excision, Neck dissection and/or Plastic surgery.
    • External / Internal Radiation therapy by using high-energy x-rays
    • Hormone therapy to remove or block the action of the hormones and stop the growth of the cancer cells.
    • Chemotherapy by use of Oral Drugs or injectables
    • Biologic therapy, also known as biotherapy or immunotherapy, in which the immune system of the patient is used to fight cancer
  • Some other newer type of treatment which also being tested in clinical trials.
    • Cryosurgery in which prostate cancer cells are destroyed by freezing
    • High-intensity focused ultrasound by using an endorectal probe
    • Proton beam radiation therapy by targeting the cancer cells by streams of protons.
  • Depending on the stage and the type of cancer, it may be beneficial for certain patients to opt for treatment through a clinical trial / cancer research process.
  • The Protocol or methodology of a clinical trial determines if the patients can opt for that clinical trial before starting their cancer treatment or during that or after that.
  • Follow-up tests and periodic check-ups should be got done to see if the disease condition has improved or if there is a recurrence or come-back of the cancer.
