Disease Overview

Adrenocortical Carcinoma

Pancreas Cancer also known as pancreatic cancer, is a neoplasm (tumor) which is malignant and has originated from the abnormal cells formed in the pancreas forming tissues. Adenocarcinoma is pancreatic cancer’s most common type (accountable for 95% of such tumors) which arises in the pancreas exocrine component and on light microscopy exhibits a glandular architecture). Neuroendocrine Tumors is pancreatic cancer’s another subtype which is not so common and originates from the islet cells. The size, the location and the kind of tumor tissue shows signs and symptoms like lower back pain, abdominal pain, and jaundice which leads to the diagnosis of this cancer.

  • Pancreatic cancer is a cancer form in which cancerous cells get formed in the tissues of the pancreas.
  • The risk of developing Pancreatic cancer increases with factors such as habitual smoking, Chronic pancreatitis etc.
  • Upper or middle abdominal pain, Jaundice or an inexplicable weight loss etc is considered as probable signs of Pancreatic cancer.
  • Upper or middle abdominal pain, Jaundice or an inexplicable weight loss etc is considered as probable signs of Pancreatic cancer.
  • The early detection and diagnosis of Pancreatic cancer is very difficult.
  • Physical examination and history, Chest x-ray, CAT scan, MRI scan, PET scan, Endoscopic ultrasound, Laparoscopy, ERCP scan, PTC scan and Biopsy are used for the early detection and diagnosis of Pancreatic cancer.
  • The treatment options and the chances of disease recovery are dependent on the stage, location and size of the tumor and whether it is surgically removable.

Treatment Option Overview

  • Patients suffering from Pancreatic cancer have different types of treatment options.
  • Standard treatment options for Pancreatic cancer are:
    • Surgical Removal which may include Whipple procedure, Total pancreatectomy, Distal pancreatectomy, Surgical biliary bypass, Endoscopic stent placement and Gastric bypass.
    • External / Internal Radiation therapy by using high-energy x-rays
    • Chemotherapy by use of Oral Drugs or injectables
    • Chemoradiation therapy as a combination of radiation therapy with chemotherapy.
    • Targeted therapy using drugs etc for the identification and targeted attack on specific cancerous cells only
  • The pain caused by pancreatic cancer can be treated by certain medicinal injections or by Radiation therapy.
  • Certain medicines may be prescribed to supplement any loss of pancreatic enzymes.
  • A newer type of treatment which is also being tested in clinical trials is :
    • Biologic therapy, also known as biotherapy or immunotherapy, in which the immune system of the patient is used to fight cancer
  • Depending on the stage and the type of cancer, it may be beneficial for certain patients to opt for treatment through a clinical trial / cancer research process.
  • The Protocol or methodology of a clinical trial determines if the patients can opt for that clinical trial before starting their cancer treatment or during that or after that.
  • Follow-up tests and periodic check-ups should be got done to see if the disease condition has improved or if there is a recurrence or come-back of the cancer.
