Disease Overview

Adrenocortical Carcinoma

Ovarian Cancer, is a cancer form in which there is a formation and growth of cancerous cells from the ovary. The early phase symptoms may arise as eating difficulty, frequent urination, bloating, pelvic pain etc and are so elusive that they are easily confused as a general illness. Almost 90% of the ovarian cancers are categorized as "epithelial" as the origin is believed to be from the epithelium (surface) of the ovary. Recent studies suggest that the ovarian cancers can also arise from the fallopian tubes which are closely related to the ovaries, and in which case the fallopian cancer cells simulate ovarian cancer. Another subtype of ovarian cancer like the germ cell tumor may originate from the egg cells.

  • Ovarian Cancer (Epithelial) is a cancer form in which cancerous cells get formed in the tissue covering the ovary.
  • The risk of developing Ovarian Cancer (Epithelial) increases for women having a family history of ovarian cancer.
  • Inherited gene mutations also cause some ovarian cancers.
  • Surgery should be considered as a preventive option by women who have a higher risk of ovarian cancer.
  • Swelling in the abdomen or abdominal pain is considered as probable signs of Ovarian Cancer.
  • Pelvic exam, abdominal ultrasound, Transvaginal ultrasound, CA 125 assay, Barium enema, IVP scan, CAT scan and Biopsy are used for the early detection and diagnosis of Ovarian Cancer (Epithelial).
  • The treatment options and the chances of disease recovery are dependent on the stage, type and size of the tumor and also the patients age and general health.

Treatment Option Overview

  • Patients suffering from Ovarian Cancer (Epithelial) have different types of treatment options.
  • Standard treatment options for Ovarian Cancer (Epithelial) are:
    • Surgical Removal which may include Hysterectomy, Unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, Bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, Omentectomy and Lymph node biopsy.
    • External / Internal Radiation therapy by using high-energy x-rays
    • Chemotherapy by use of Oral Drugs or injectables
  • New types of treatment are being tested in clinical trials.
    • Biologic therapy, also known as biotherapy or immunotherapy, in which the immune system of the patient is used to fight cancer.
    • Targeted therapy using drugs etc for the identification and targeted attack on specific cancerous cells only
  • Depending on the stage and the type of cancer, it may be beneficial for certain patients to opt for treatment through a clinical trial / cancer research process.
  • The Protocol or methodology of a clinical trial determines if the patients can opt for that clinical trial before starting their cancer treatment or during that or after that.
  • Follow-up tests and periodic check-ups should be got done to see if the disease condition has improved or if there is a recurrence or come-back of the cancer.
