Disease Overview

Adrenocortical Carcinoma

Oral Cancer is a cancer form in which the cancerous tissues grow in the oral cavity. Oral cancers can originate as a primary lesion from the oral tissues, or can get formed by metastasis from a distant area of origin or from a nearby anatomic structure like the nasal cavity. More than 90% of oral cancers originate in the tissue lining of the mouth and lips as squamous cell carcinomas and though it most commonly involves the tongue, it may also form on the mouth floor or the palate, the cheek lining, the gums and the lips. Under the microscope, most of the oral cancers, irrespective of the area of growth, look very similar.

  • Oral Cancer is a cancer form in which cancerous cells get formed in the tissues of the lips or mouth.
  • The risk of developing Oral Cancer increases with factors such as habitual alcohol and tobacco use.
  • Lump or non-healing sores on the lips or mouth are considered as probable signs of Oral Cancer.
  • Physical examination and history, Endoscopy, X-rays, MRI scan, CAT scan, Exfoliative cytology, Barium swallow x-rays and PET scan are used for the early detection and diagnosis of Oral Cancer.
  • The treatment options and the chances of disease recovery are dependent on the stage and location of the tumor and also whether it has spread to the blood vessels.

Treatment Option Overview

  • Patients suffering from Oral Cancer have different types of treatment options.
  • Standard treatment options for Oral Cancer are:
    • Surgical Removal which may include a Wide local excision, Neck dissection and/or Plastic surgery.
    • External / Internal Radiation therapy by using high-energy x-rays
  • Some other newer type of treatment which also being tested in clinical trials.
    • Chemotherapy by use of Oral Drugs or injectables
    • Hyperfractionated radiation therapy by giving small and divided doses of radiation multiple times in a day.
    • Hyperthermia therapy by heating the affected body tissue to more than the normal temperature for damaging and killing the cancer cells.
  • Depending on the stage and the type of cancer, it may be beneficial for certain patients to opt for treatment through a clinical trial / cancer research process.
  • The Protocol or methodology of a clinical trial determines if the patients can opt for that clinical trial before starting their cancer treatment or during that or after that.
  • Follow-up tests and periodic check-ups should be got done to see if the disease condition has improved or if there is a recurrence or come-back of the cancer.
