Disease Overview

Adrenocortical Carcinoma

Liver Cancer, or hepatic cancer, originates as cancerous tumors on the surface or inside the liver. The detection of Liver tumors comes, often by accident or chance, by the medical imaging tests and otherwise by symptoms such as a mass or pain in the abdomen, nausea, jaundice or any liver dysfunction indicators. Unlike liver metastases, Liver cancer forms directly in the liver and does not originate from other body organs with a migration to the liver.

  • Liver Cancer is a cancer form in which cancerous cells get formed in the tissues of the liver.
  • The risk of developing Liver Cancer increases with factors such as existing conditions of hepatitis or cirrhosis.
  • Having a hard lump or pain in upper abdomen’s right side area are considered as probable signs of Liver Cancer
  • Physical examination and history, Serum tumor marker test, Liver function tests, CAT scan, MRI scan, Ultrasound exam, Laparoscopy and Biopsy are used for the early detection and diagnosis of Liver Cancer.
  • The treatment options and the chances of disease recovery are dependent on the stage and size of the tumor and also its spread in the liver or to the other parts of the body.

Treatment Option Overview

  • Patients suffering from Liver Cancer have different types of treatment options.
  • Standard treatment options for Liver Cancer are:
    • Surgical Removal by use of procedures such as Cryosurgery, Partial hepatectomy, Radiofrequency ablation, Total hepatectomy and liver transplant.
    • External / Internal Radiation therapy alongwith Radiosensitizer drugs.
    • Chemotherapy by use of Oral Drugs or injectables.
    • Direct injection of ethanol into a tumor by a Percutaneous ethanol injection,
    • Targeted therapy using drugs and Monoclonal antibody therapy for the identification and targeted attack on specific cancerous cells only
  • Some other newer type of treatment which also being tested in clinical trials are :
    • Hyperthermia therapy by heating the affected body tissue to more than the normal temperature for damaging and killing the cancer cells.
    • Biologic therapy, also known as biotherapy or immunotherapy, in which the immune system of the patient is used to fight cancer.
  • Depending on the stage and the type of cancer, it may be beneficial for certain patients to opt for treatment through a clinical trial / cancer research process.
  • The Protocol or methodology of a clinical trial determines if the patients can opt for that clinical trial before starting their cancer treatment or during that or after that.
  • Follow-up tests and periodic check-ups should be got done to see if the disease condition has improved or if there is a recurrence or come-back of the cancer.
