Disease Overview

Adrenocortical Carcinoma

Leukemia - Acute Myeloid (AML), or acute myelogenous leukemia, is a leukemia type or a myeloid line of white blood cells cancer with a characteristic of the bone marrow producing an excess of white blood cells. These abnormal white blood cells have such a rapid growth and the leukemic cells are accumulated so fast in the bone marrow that they cause a severe drop in the blood platelets, the red blood cells and the normal white blood cells; with a development of physical symptoms like breathlessness, fatigue, fast infections, easy bleeding and bruising etc. As the very name indicates, the progression of this cancer is very rapid and if it is left untreated, it can cause even death within weeks or months. This leukemia type is more common in its effect on adults and the risk factors of its occurrence are related to age increase.

  • Acute Myeloid Leukemia is a cancer form in which the bone marrow produces an excess amount of white blood cells called myeloblasts.
  • The risk of developing Acute Myeloid Leukemia increases with smoking habbits and on a history of any prior chemotherapy or radiation exposure.
  • A persistent weakness or tired feeling, night sweats, Fever, getting bruised easily and easy bleeding, weight loss etc. are considered as probable signs of Acute Myeloid Leukemia.
  • Physical examination and history, Complete blood count test, Peripheral blood smear, Cytogenetic analysis, Immunophenotyping and RT–PCR test , Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy are used for the early detection and diagnosis of Acute Myeloid Leukemia.
  • The treatment options and the chances of disease recovery are dependent on the patients age and whether there is a spread of the cancer to the central nervous system.

Treatment Option Overview

  • Patients suffering from Acute Myeloid Leukemia have different types of treatment options.
  • Treatment for Acute Myeloid Leukemia is done in two phases, first as Remission induction therapy and second as Post-remission therapy.
  • Standard treatment options for Acute Myeloid Leukemia are:
    • Chemotherapy by use of Oral Drugs or injectables.
    • External / Internal Radiation therapy by using high-energy x-rays.
    • Chemotherapy by doing a transplant of stem cells to replace the blood-forming cells which the cancer treatment had destroyed.
    • Other drug therapy using all-trans-retinoic-acid (ATRA) and Arsenic trioxide.
  • New types of treatment are being tested in clinical trials.
    • Targeted therapy using drugs and Monoclonal antibody therapy for the identification and targeted attack on specific cancerous cells only
  • Depending on the stage and the type of cancer, it may be beneficial for certain patients to opt for treatment through a clinical trial / cancer research process.
  • The Protocol or methodology of a clinical trial determines if the patients can opt for that clinical trial before starting their cancer treatment or during that or after that.
  • Follow-up tests and periodic check-ups should be got done to see if the disease condition has improved or if there is a recurrence or come-back of the cancer.
