Disease Overview

Adrenocortical Carcinoma

Leukemia - Acute Lymphoblastic (ALL) is a leukemia type or a white blood cells cancer with a characteristic of the bone marrow producing an excess of abnormal white blood cells. These cancerous white blood cells keep on multiplying and there is so much of an overproduction that they cause damage to organs and even death by shutting out the bone marrows normal cells. This cancer has a peak occurance either in very early childhood period (age of 2–5 years) or in old age life; the observed cure rate being upto 80% in children and a disease-less expectancy in almost half of the adults population.

  • Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia is a cancer form in which the bone marrow produces an excess amount of abnormal white blood cells called lymphocytes.
  • The risk of developing Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia increases on a history of any prior chemotherapy or radiation exposure.
  • A persistent weakness or tired feeling, night sweats, Fever, getting bruised easily and easy bleeding etc. are considered as probable signs of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.
  • Physical examination and history, Complete blood count test, Blood chemistry studies, Peripheral blood smear, Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy are used for the early detection and diagnosis of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.
  • The treatment options and the chances of disease recovery are dependent on the patients age and whether there is a spread of the cancer to the brain or the spinal cord regions.

Treatment Option Overview

  • Patients suffering from Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia have different types of treatment options.
  • Treatment for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia is done in two phases, first as Remission induction therapy and second as Post-remission therapy, with a CNS (central nervous system) sanctuary therapy treatment generally given during both the phases.
  • Standard treatment options for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia are:
    • Chemotherapy by use of Oral Drugs or injectables
    • External / Internal Radiation therapy by using high-energy x-rays.
    • Chemotherapy by doing a transplant of stem cells to replace the blood-forming cells which the cancer treatment had destroyed.
    • Targeted therapy using drugs etc for the identification and targeted attack on specific cancerous cells only.
  • A certain other newer type of treatment which is being tested in clinical trials is :
    • Biologic tBiologic therapy, also known as biotherapy or immunotherapy, in which the immune system of the patient is used to fight cancer
  • Depending on the stage and the type of cancer, it may be beneficial for certain patients to opt for treatment through a clinical trial / cancer research process.
  • The Protocol or methodology of a clinical trial determines if the patients can opt for that clinical trial before starting their cancer treatment or during that or after that.
  • Side effects may arise from any of the available cancer treatments for this disease, even after months or years, and may cause some other type of cancer.
  • Follow-up tests and periodic check-ups should be got done to see if the disease condition has improved or if there is a recurrence or come-back of the cancer.
