Disease Overview

Adrenocortical Carcinoma

Gallbladder Cancer is not a common form of cancer and the instances are common geographically only in central / Eastern Europe and Americas, Japan, China and north of India and ethnically in Hispanics and Native American Indians. The early diagnosis of Gallbladder cancer can make it curable by a removal of the gallbladder, the affected part of the liver and the related lymph nodes. This cancer is detected sometimes from abdominal pain or an occurrence of jaundice or vomiting, and sometimes when the spread has been till the liver.

  • Gallbladder cancer is a cancer form in which cancerous cells get formed in the gallbladder tissues.
  • The risk of developing Gallbladder cancer increases on the sexual and ethnic reasons such as being female or being a Native American.
  • General conditions such jaundice, pain in the abdomen, and vomiting are sometimes symptoms of Gallbladder cancer.
  • The early detection and diagnosis of Gallbladder cancer is very difficult as the disease does not show any specific symptoms in its early stages.
  • Physical examination and history, Liver function tests, CEA assay, CA 19-9 assay, Blood chemistry studies, CAT scan, Ultrasound exam, PTC sacn, Chest x-ray, ERCP scan, Laparoscopy and Biopsy are used for the early detection and diagnosis of Gallbladder cancer.
  • The treatment options and the chances of disease recovery are dependent on the stage and looks of the cancer cells and the possibility of its surgical removal.

Treatment Option Overview

  • Patients suffering from Gallbladder cancer have different types of treatment options.
  • Standard treatment options for Gallbladder cancer are:
    • Surgical Removal by cholecystectomy surgery or palliative surgery procedures like Surgical biliary bypass, Endoscopic stent placement and Percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage.
    • External / Internal Radiation therapy by using high-energy x-rays External / Internal Radiation therapy by using high-energy x-rays.
    • Chemotherapy by use of Oral Drugs or injectables.
  • Certain other newer type of treatments which are being tested in clinical trials are :
    • Hyperthermia therapy by heating the affected body tissue to more than the normal temperature for damaging and killing the cancer cells.
    • Radiation sensitizers
  • Depending on the stage and the type of cancer, it may be beneficial for certain patients to opt for treatment through a clinical trial / cancer research process.
  • The Protocol or methodology of a clinical trial determines if the patients can opt for that clinical trial before starting their cancer treatment or during that or after that.
  • Follow-up tests and periodic check-ups should be got done to see if the disease condition has improved or if there is a recurrence or come-back of the cancer.
