Disease Overview

Adrenocortical Carcinoma

Endometrium Cancer or Endometrial cancer or Endometrial carcinoma, refers to certain types of malignant tumors which arise from the glandular mucous membrane lining of the uterus (Endometrium). Endometrioid Adenocarcinoma, is a subtype of Endometrium Cancer only and develops in the setting of endometrial hyperplasia, typically within a few decades time of menopause. It is related to obesity and an excessive estrogen intake and shows up with a symptom such as vaginal bleeding. Endometrium Cancer, after ovarian and cervical cancer, is a major cause of death by a gynecologic cancer, yet ENDOMETRIAL CANCER HAS A HIGH CURE RATE.

  • Endometrium Cancer is a cancer form in which cancerous cells get formed in the tissues of the endometrium (the glandular mucous membrane lining of the uterus).
  • The risk of developing Endometrium Cancer increases in patients who take tamoxifen (as a treatment of breast cancer) and in women taking estrogen ( alone without progesterone).
  • Unusual vaginal discharge which is not related to menstruation periods, pain in the pelvic area and a painful sexual intercourse are considered as probable signs of Endometrium Cancer.
  • Physical examination and history, Transvaginal ultrasound exam, CAT scan and study of endometrial tissue samples taken by Endometrial biopsy or Dilatation and curettage (D and C) are used for the early detection and diagnosis of Endometrium Cancer.
  • The treatment options and the chances of disease recovery are dependent on the stage and location of the tumor and also whether it is affected by progesterone.

Treatment Option Overview

  • Patients suffering from Endometrial cancer have different types of treatment options.
  • • Standard treatment options for Endometrial cancer are:
    • Surgical Removal by use of procedures such as by Total hysterectomy, Bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy or Radical hysterectomy.
    • External / Internal Radiation therapy by using high-energy x-rays.
    • Hormone therapy to remove or block the action of the hormones and stop the growth of the cancer cells.
  • A newer type of treatment which is also being tested in clinical trials is :
    • Chemotherapy by use of Oral Drugs or injectables.
  • Depending on the stage and the type of cancer, it may be beneficial for certain patients to opt for treatment through a clinical trial / cancer research process.
  • The Protocol or methodology of a clinical trial determines if the patients can opt for that clinical trial before starting their cancer treatment or during that or after that.
  • Follow-up tests and periodic check-ups should be got done to see if the disease condition has improved or if there is a recurrence or come-back of the cancer.
