Disease Overview

Adrenocortical Carcinoma

Cervical Cancer is an abnormal formation of cancerous tissues which arise from cells of the uterine cervix. This disease causes the cervix cells to become abnormal and have an uncontrollable growth and a resultant formation of tumors. Abnormal vaginal bleeding is considered a common symptom for further detection of cervical cancer, however in many cases there may be a progression of the cancer to an advanced stage without showing any obvious.

  • Cervical cancer is a cancer form in which cancerous cells get formed in the tissues of the uterine cervix.
  • The risk of developing Cervical cancer increases on the existence of Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection.
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding, pain in the pelvic area and a painful sexual intercourse are considered as probable signs of Cervical cancer.
  • Cervical Cancer may get developed and progress even without any common noticeable signs and symptoms.
  • Physical examination and history, Pelvic exam, Pap smear, HPV test, Endocervical curettage, Colposcopy and Biopsy are used for the early detection and diagnosis of Cervical cancer.
  • The treatment options and the chances of disease recovery are dependent on the stage, size, type and location of the tumor and also the age of the patient and her general health.

Treatment Option Overview

  • Patients suffering from cervical cancer have different types of treatment options.
  • Standard treatment options for cervical cancer are:
    • Surgical Removal by use of procedures such as Conization, Hysterectomy (Total, Radical or Modified radical), Bilateral salpingo - oophorectomy, exenteration of the pelvis, Laser surgery, Cryosurgery and LEEP - Loop electrosurgical excision procedure.
    • External / Internal Radiation therapy by using high-energy x-rays
    • Chemotherapy by use of Oral Drugs or injectables.
  • Some other newer type of treatment which also being tested in clinical trials.
  • Depending on the stage and the type of cancer, it may be beneficial for certain patients to opt for treatment through a clinical trial / cancer research process.
  • The Protocol or methodology of a clinical trial determines if the patients can opt for that clinical trial before starting their cancer treatment or during that or after that.
  • Follow-up tests and periodic check-ups should be got done to see if the disease condition has improved or if there is a recurrence or come-back of the cancer.
