Disease Overview

Adrenocortical Carcinoma

Carcinoid Tumors is a very rare and slow-growth cancer usually formed in the gastrointestinal tract; starting from the mucosal lining of a variety of gastrointestinal tract organs such as the stomach, the appendix, the small intestine, rectum and colon or from the lungs. In the later stages, the Carcinoid tumors sometimes cause a production and release of hormones into the body that causes the ‘carcinoid syndrome’ and shows the signs and symptoms such as a flushing of skin on the face and/or upper chest, breathing trouble and diarrhea.

  • Gastrointestinal Carcinoid Tumor is a cancer form in which cancerous cells get formed in the gastrointestinal tract lining.
  • The risk of developing Gastrointestinal Carcinoid Tumor increases on certain factors such as family history or the stomach's inability to make stomach acid.
  • Gastrointestinal carcinoid tumors do not show any signs and symptoms in the diseases early stages and infact, its the tests or treatments done for other conditions which highlight the formation of this tumor.
  • The spread of the tumor to the liver may cause the occurrence of the Carcinoid syndrome and show the signs and symptoms of this cancer type.
  • Physical examination and history, Blood chemistry study, Tumor Marker tests, 24-hour urine test, MIBG scan, CAT scan, MRI scan, PET scan, Endoscopic ultrasound, Upper endoscopy, Colonoscopy, Capsule endoscopy and Biopsy are used for the early detection and diagnosis of Gastrointestinal Carcinoid Tumor.
  • The treatment options and the chances of disease recovery are dependent on the stage, size and location of the tumor.

Treatment Option Overview

  • Patients suffering from Gastrointestinal Carcinoid Tumors have different types of treatment options.
  • • Standard treatment options for Gastrointestinal Carcinoid Tumors are:
    • Surgical Removal by any one of Endoscopic resection, Local excision, Resection, Cryosurgery, Radiofrequency ablation, Liver transplant or Hepatic artery embolization.
    • External / Internal Radiation therapy or Radiopharmaceutical therapy
    • Chemotherapy by use of Oral Drugs or injectables
    • Hormone therapy to remove or block the action of the hormones and stop the growth of the cancer cells.
  • Carcinoid Syndrome can be needed to be treated by Hormone therapy, Interferon therapy and also by taking medicine for diarrhea, skin rashes etc.
  • Certain other newer type of treatments which are being tested in clinical trials are :
    • Targeted therapy using drugs etc for the identification and targeted attack on specific cancerous cells only.
  • Depending on the stage and the type of cancer, it may be beneficial for certain patients to opt for treatment through a clinical trial / cancer research process.
  • The Protocol or methodology of a clinical trial determines if the patients can opt for that clinical trial before starting their cancer treatment or during that or after that.
  • Follow-up tests and periodic check-ups should be got done to see if the disease condition has improved or if there is a recurrence or come-back of the cancer.
