Disease Overview

Adrenocortical Carcinoma

Breast Cancer is a kind of cancer with its origination from the breast tissue, commonly from the milk ducts inner lining or from the lobules supplying the milk to the ducts. Breast Cancer can be ‘ductal carcinomas’ (cancers which originate from the milk ducts) or ‘lobular carcinomas’ (cancers which originate from the lobules). The vast majority of Breast cancer cases occur in women but the occurrence of the disease in males is also possible.

  • Breast cancer is a cancer form in which cancerous cells get formed in the tissues of the breast.
  • The risk of developing Breast cancer increases on certain factors such as Older age, early menstruation in life, giving first birth at an older age , family history etc.
  • Hereditary reasons such as inherited gene mutations can also be a cause of Breast cancer.
  • A lump in the breast or a change in its size and shape are considered as probable signs of Breast cancer.
  • Physical examination and history, Clinical breast exam (CBE), Mammogram, Ultrasound exam, MRI scan, Blood chemistry studies and Biopsy are used for the early detection and diagnosis of any Breast cancer.
  • In case of detection of Breast Cancer, certain more tests - Estrogen and progesterone receptor test, Human epidermal growth factor type 2 receptor (HER2/neu) test and Multigene tests - are done to study the cancer cells and the best treatment for that.
  • The treatment options and the chances of disease recovery are dependent on the stage, type and location of the tumor.

Treatment Option Overview

  • Patients suffering from Breast cancer have different types of treatment options.
  • Standard treatment options for Breast cancer are:
    • Surgical Removal by Breast-conserving surgery, total mastectomy or Modified radical mastectomy.
    • Biopsy of the Sentinel lymph node prior to the above surgery.
    • External / Internal Radiation therapy by using high-energy x-rays
    • Chemotherapy by use of Oral Drugs or injectables
    • Hormone therapy to remove or block the action of the hormones and stop the growth of the cancer cells.
    • Targeted therapy using drugs etc for the identification and targeted attack on specific cancerous cells only
  • A certain other newer type of treatments which is being tested in clinical trials is :
    • High-dose chemotherapy followed by stem cell transplant to replace blood-forming cells which were destroyed during the cancer treatment process.
  • Depending on the stage and the type of cancer, it may be beneficial for certain patients to opt for treatment through a clinical trial / cancer research process.
  • The Protocol or methodology of a clinical trial determines if the patients can opt for that clinical trial before starting their cancer treatment or during that or after that.
  • Follow-up tests and periodic check-ups should be got done to see if the disease condition has improved or if there is a recurrence or come-back of the cancer.
