Disease Overview

Adrenocortical Carcinoma

Bone Marrow Cancer is of two types - Primary Bone Cancer or Secondary Bone Cancer. Secondary Bone Cancer is when the cancerous cells have spread to the bone from other cancer diseased organs. In Primary Bone Cancer, the cancerous cells get formed in the bone cells itself and the cancer type may variably be classified under Leukaemia, Multiple Myeloma or Lymphoma depending on the occurrence and area affected by the cancer.

  • Bone Marrow Cancer happens as Leukaemia when there is a production of abnormal white blood cells in the bone marrow.
  • Bone Marrow Cancer happens as Multiple Myeloma when the development of the cancer is from the bone marrow plasma cells.
  • Bone Marrow Cancer happens as Lymphoma when the affected area is the lymphatic system and, in certain cases, the bone marrow.
  • Poor Appetite, Weight Loss, Fatigue, Dizziness, Weakness, Fever, Anaemia, Bone Pain with Unexpected Fractures, Swelling and reduced resistance power to Infections are considered as probable signs of Bone Marrow Cancer.
  • The risk of Bone Marrow Cancer is related to an individuals age and being of the male sex.
  • Physical examination, Blood and Urine Immunoglobulin study, Bone Marrow Aspiration and Biopsy, Skeletal Bone Survey, Complete Blood Count test, Blood Chemistry Study, 24-hour Urine Test and MRI scan are used for the early detection and diagnosis of Bone Marrow Cancer.
  • The treatment options and the chances of disease recovery are dependent on the location, stage and type of the cancer and also the age and health of the patient.

Treatment Option Overview

  • Patients suffering from Bone Marrow Cancer have different types of treatment options.
  • Standard treatment options for Bone Marrow Cancer are:
    • Surgical Removal
    • External / Internal Radiation therapy by using high-energy x-rays
    • Chemotherapy by use of Oral Drugs or injectables
    • Targeted therapy with Bortezomib.
    • Stem Cell transplant after a High-dose chemotherapy to restore the body's blood cells.
    • Biologic therapy, also known as biotherapy or immunotherapy, in which the immune system of the patient is used to fight cancer
  • • A certain other newer type of treatment which is being tested in clinical trials is :
    • Combination therapy using an appropriate combination of chemotherapy, biologic therapy, steroid therapy, and drugs such as thalidomide and lenalidomide.
  • Supportive care is necessary to ease the pain or any associated problems arising out of the disease and from its treatment.
  • Depending on the stage and the type of cancer, it may be beneficial for certain patients to opt for treatment through a clinical trial / cancer research process.
  • The Protocol or methodology of a clinical trial determines if the patients can opt for that clinical trial before starting their cancer treatment or during that or after that.
  • Follow-up tests and periodic check-ups should be got done to see if the disease condition has improved or if there is a recurrence or come-back of the cancer.
