Disease Overview

Adrenocortical Carcinoma

Bladder Cancer is a type of cancerous cell formation starting from the epithelial lining of the urinary bladder. In this disease the cancerous cells have an uncontrolled multiplication in the bladder ( the hollow and muscular organ which is located in the pelvis and has a function of urine storage ). Urothelial carcinoma or transitional cell carcinoma is the most common form of bladder cancer in which the normal transitional cells, which form the innermost lining of the bladder wall, undergo changes resulting in an uncontrolled cancer cell growth.

  • Bladder Cancer is a cancer form in which cancerous cells get formed in the tissues of the bladder.
  • The risk of developing Bladder Cancer increases on the existence of habitual smoking habits in an individual.
  • Blood in the urine or pain during urination are considered as probable signs of Bladder Cancer.
  • Physical exam and history, Internal examination of the vagina and / or rectum, Urinalysis, Urine cytology, Cystoscopy, IVP scan ,CAT scan and Biopsy are used for the early detection and diagnosis of Bladder Cancer.
  • The treatment options and the chances of disease recovery are dependent on the stage and type of the tumor and also the age and general health of the patient.

Treatment Option Overview

  • Patients suffering from Bladder Cancer have different types of treatment options.
  • Standard treatment options for Bladder Cancer are:
    • Surgical Removal by procedures such as Transurethral resection with fulguration, Radical cystectomy, Segmental cystectomy and Urinary diversion
    • External / Internal Radiation therapy by using high-energy x-rays
    • Chemotherapy by use of Oral Drugs or injectables
    • Biologic therapy, also known as biotherapy or immunotherapy, in which the immune system of the patient is used to fight cancer.
  • Certain other newer type of treatments which are being tested in clinical trials is :
    • Chemoprevention by using drugs, vitamins etc to reduce the risk of occurrence or the recurrence of Bladder Cancer.
    • Photodynamic therapy as the use of a certain type of laser light to activate a pre-injected light-activating drug for killing the cancer cells and avoiding any damage to healthy tissue surrounding them.
  • Depending on the stage and the type of cancer, it may be beneficial for certain patients to opt for treatment through a clinical trial / cancer research process.
  • The Protocol or methodology of a clinical trial determines if the patients can opt for that clinical trial before starting their cancer treatment or during that or after that.
  • Follow-up tests and periodic check-ups should be got done to see if the disease condition has improved or if there is a recurrence or come-back of the cancer.
