Disease Overview

Adrenocortical Carcinoma

Bile Duct Cancer is a rare form of tumor which originates from the cells lining the inner surface of the bile duct. This malignant tumor may be intrahepatic (located at the bile ducts within the liver) or extrahepatic (leads from the liver to the small intestine). More generally, Bile Duct Cancer can originate from the cells lining the inner surface of the bile ducts but may also arise at anyplace along the biliary tract, within or outside the liver. Bile Duct cancer is typically a slow-growing tumor which spreads by affecting the neighboring areas and the lymphatic vessels.

  • Bile Duct Cancer is a rare disease wherein cancerous cells get formed in that part of bile duct which is outside the liver.
  • The risk of developing Bile Duct Cancer increases if an individual has colitis or certain other liver diseases.
  • Jaundice and Abdominal Pain are considered as probable signs of Bile Duct Cancer.
  • Ultrasound exam, CAT scan, MRI, PET scan, ERCP, PTC, Liver function tests and Tumor marker tests are used for the early detection and diagnosis of Bile Duct Cancer.
  • The treatment options and the chances of disease recovery are dependent on the stage and location of the tumor.

Treatment Option Overview

  • Patients suffering from Bile Duct Cancer have different types of treatment options.
  • Standard treatment options for Bile Duct Cancer are:
    • Surgical Removal by procedures such as Removal of the bile duct, Partial hepatectomy, Whipple procedure, Surgical biliary bypass and Stent placement
    • External / Internal Radiation therapy by using high-energy x-rays
    • Chemotherapy by use of Oral Drugs or injectables
  • A certain other newer type of treatment which is being tested in clinical trials is :
    • A combinination of radiation therapy with radiosensitizers drugs to kill more of the cancerous cells.
  • Depending on the stage and the type of cancer, it may be beneficial for certain patients to opt for treatment through a clinical trial / cancer research process.
  • The Protocol or methodology of a clinical trial determines if the patients can opt for that clinical trial before starting their cancer treatment or during that or after that.
  • Follow-up tests and periodic check-ups should be got done to see if the disease condition has improved or if there is a recurrence or come-back of the cancer.
