Disease Overview

Adrenocortical Carcinoma

Anal Cancer is a type of cancer which arises from the anus and is different from the more common colorectal cancer. The cause or origin of Anal Cancer, its risk factors, the clinical advancement, its clinical / pathologic stage, and treatment options are all different from colorectal cancer. Anal cancer is typically a form of cancer of the carcinoma type that arises near the junction of the squamocolumnar. The medical classification / types of Anal Cancer is mainly as basaloid or cloacogenic with the other types termed as adeno-carcinoma, sarcoma, lymphoma and melanoma.

  • Anal cancer is diagnosed when malignant / cancerous cells get formed in the anus tissues.
  •  An infection of human papillomavirus (HPV) aggravates the risk of development of anal cancer.
  • A probable indicator of anal cancer is any bleeding from the areas of the anus or rectum or the formation of a lump near the anus region.
  • Physical examination and history, Digital rectal examination (DRE), Anoscopy, Proctoscopy, Endo-anal or endorectal ultrasound and Biopsy are used for the detection and diagnosis of anal cancer.
  • The treatment options and the chances of disease recovery are dependent on the stage, size and location of the tumor in the anus.

Treatment Option Overview

  • Patients suffering from Anal Cancer have different types of treatment options.
  • Standard treatment options for Anal Cancer are:
    • Surgical Removal by procedures like Local resection and Abdominoperineal resection
    • External / Internal Radiation therapy by using high-energy x-rays
    • Chemotherapy by use of Oral Drugs or injectables
  • Anal Cancer patients who are suffering from HIV are usually given a lower dose of anticancer drugs and radiation therapy than those not having HIV.
  • A certain other newer type of treatment which is being tested in clinical trials is :
    • A combinination of radiation therapy with radiosensitizers drugs to kill more of the cancerous cells
  • Depending on the stage and the type of cancer, it may be beneficial for certain patients to opt for treatment through a clinical trial / cancer research process.
  • Patients can enter clinical trials before, during, or after starting their cancer treatment.
  • Follow-up tests and periodic check-ups should be got done to see if the disease condition has improved or if there is a recurrence or come-back of the cancer.
